Sedimentary rock – a study in tones, scale and texture

I came across this rock (actually somewhere between a rock and a boulder) today while out on a walk. I moved the iPhone close enough to remove all sense of #scale and focused (literally and figuratively) on the #texture in the rock. The black and white conversion was done with #VSCO – I tried a couple of other apps but this was my favorite. I really like the diagonal lines and tonal variation provided by the rock strata, as well as the depth created by the sloping section of rock.

Monochrome silhouette of a golden dome

Here is a shot of the Greek Orthodox Church on East Alameda Avenue in Denver, CO. This was shot using #Hipstamatic with #JohnS lens and #BlackKeysSuperGrain film. The #silhouette effect was a bit too strong with this set-up so I brought the image into #PhotoshopTouch and brought back the 1/4 tones. With this adjustment we get the silhouette effect but still retain some detail within the dome. It’s really amazing what can be done with these inexpensive iPhone apps. #discoverpressgram #dpbw

First day of fall in Lakewood, CO

I went with Emma and Julie to see The Wizard of Oz in 3D at Colorado Mills mall in Lakewood, CO. I noticed these trees as we were walking up to the theater. It seems pretty early for this much color. I have a feeling we are in for a long cold winter here in the Rocky Mountains. By the way, the movie was awesome, as usual – highly recommended. #fall #autumn #colorado #discoverpressgram

Abstract – bookshelves and lights

I came across this photo as I was scrolling through the camera roll within VSCOcam. I think it must have been an accidental exposure that was made as I pulled the iPhone out of my pocket. I think it makes a pretty cool abstract photo. #happyaccident #discoverpressgram #abstract

Birdbath reflection in a sea of green

I was out for a walk today and noticed this little scene and I had to wade into the shrubbery to capture it. The little birdbath is almost completely surrounded by bushes, hence the soft light. It was this soft light and the reflection that really caught my eye, but the little pops of color add a nice element to the picture. This one also looks really nice in black and white, so that may come later. #discoverpressgram #flora #softlight

Black and white conversion with MonoPhix

Same photo as yesterday but with a Black & White conversion with a cool iPhone app called MonoPhix. I went pretty contrasty with the conversion but tried to hold a tiny bit of detail in the highlights and shadows. #monophix #discoverpressgram #flowers #contrast #texture

Shadows and flowers on a September morning

Yellow flowers against a weathered cedar fence on a beautiful September morning. The shadows of other flowers are visible in the texture of the wood. It’s nice to have some sunshine after so much rain. #discoverpressgram #fenway #texture #flowers #sidelight

Those who don’t study history…

Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it.
Tonight we were talking to Emma about the importance of history and social studies classes (she is a math and science girl) and she said “I don’t care about anything B.E. – Before Emma. If it happened before February 28th, 2004 it just doesn’t matter.” Very funny, but I think Emma’s Social Studies teacher may have her work cut out for her. #hipstamatic #discoverpressgram #portrait
