Cameras I love – the Ricoh GX100

This is another of the cameras that I love. The Ricoh GX100 is the best point and shoot camera that I have ever used. Sure it has a tiny sensor and low light image quality leaves something to be desired, but it is just so much fun to shoot. With stepped zoom, dual control dial and custom settings it shoots like a pro camera but fits in your pocket. Shot with the native #iPhone5 camera app and processed with #Snapseed. #dpbw #discoverpressgram

What lies over the next hill?

Road trips to a new area are always fun. You never know what’s beyond the next horizon, and there is always another horizon beyond that. This photo was shot using #Hipstamatic with #JohnS lens #BlacKeysSuperGrain film. No post processing necessary. #dpbw #DiscoverPressgram

A silver lining

Colorado tends to have really deep blue skies, so back in the film days it was always fun to shoot with a red filter over the lens. It would turn the blue skies to black and would make the clouds really pop. Of course, today’s technology has rendered the red filter pretty much useless, but it is always nice to get that dramatic look. This photo was shot using #Hipstamatic with #JohnS lens and #BlacKeysSuperGrain film. No post processing necessary. #monochrome #dpbw

A broken rock in the mid-day sun

I find this rock fascinating. How did it break? Why is there a round rock within a round rock? Where is the missing piece? The photo was shot with the native #iPhone5 camera app and the #monochrome conversion was done with #Snapseed. The level of control that Snapseed gives is awesome. Note the detail in the shadow side of the rock, this area went completely black in some of the other apps that I tried. #discoverpressgram #texture #shadowdetail

Ornamental grass before the snow falls

I walk past this patch of ornamental grass almost every day. I thought I had better stop and snap a photo today, we are expecting snow overnight. I certainly hope this doesn’t signal the end of Autumn, it’s my favorite time of year. This photo was shot with the native #iPhone5 camera app, converted to #monochrome with #VSCO, and then punched up and given some subtle blurring around the edges with #Snapseed.

Jaxon comes in from the cold

There is snow in the forecast for Denver! Time to break out the winter weather gear. Here is my nephew Jaxon in his stocking cap (with ears) and snow pants just after coming in from the cold. I had to go all the way back to February of 2011 in my camera roll to pull this image. It was shot with my 4th Gen iPod Touch and was processed using #Filterstorm. #discoverpressgram #monochrome #dpbw

Mist or lens flare?

The misty view from my front porch, or a bright and sunny afternoon? Actually it is the latter. Lens flare has given a misty appearance to the upper left corner of the frame and has reduced the overall contrast to make the light appear far softer than it was. Black and white conversion was done with #VSCO. #monochrome #dpbw #discoverpressgram

Summer sunflowers in suburbia

We had a cold and dreary day here in the Mile-High City, so I went back into my #Hipstamatic archive to grab a more summery photo. Here we have three sunflowers in front of a large suburban home. The combination of #JohnS and #BlackKeysSuperGrain gives a nice glow to the flowers but was able to maintain detail in the shadow side of the house. No additional post processing necessary.

Sedimentary rock – a study in tones, scale and texture

I came across this rock (actually somewhere between a rock and a boulder) today while out on a walk. I moved the iPhone close enough to remove all sense of #scale and focused (literally and figuratively) on the #texture in the rock. The black and white conversion was done with #VSCO – I tried a couple of other apps but this was my favorite. I really like the diagonal lines and tonal variation provided by the rock strata, as well as the depth created by the sloping section of rock.

Monochrome silhouette of a golden dome

Here is a shot of the Greek Orthodox Church on East Alameda Avenue in Denver, CO. This was shot using #Hipstamatic with #JohnS lens and #BlackKeysSuperGrain film. The #silhouette effect was a bit too strong with this set-up so I brought the image into #PhotoshopTouch and brought back the 1/4 tones. With this adjustment we get the silhouette effect but still retain some detail within the dome. It’s really amazing what can be done with these inexpensive iPhone apps. #discoverpressgram #dpbw
